The Association for Academic Surgery is pleased to present its inaugural 2018 Aspiring Leaders Development Program. This 12-month mentorship program is designed to engage high-potential academic surgeons to develop and implement leadership competencies, supported with associated high quality mentorship, in order to impact personal, team and organizational goals.

Program Outline: The elements of the Aspiring Leaders Development Program are as follows:

  • A formalized 12-month mentorship relationship with a senior-level surgeon in the United States, which includes
    • An in-person initial meeting between mentor & mentee at the 2018 American College of Surgeons (ACS) meeting, October 21-25, 2018 in Boston
    • Quarterly conversations by phone between mentor and mentee
    • An in-person work-based one-day experience with the mentor in the spring of 2019
    • An in-person closure and debriefing meeting at the close of the 12-month mentorship period – to take place at the 2019 ACS, held October 27-31, 2019 in San Francisco
  • Attendance at the 2018 AAS Early Career Development Course, October 20 in Boston
  • A copy of the AAS publication LEADERSHIP IN SURGERY
  • A peer-to-peer engagement program

Eligibility: Applicants must be

  • Within 3 to 8 years of their first surgical faculty appointment
  • Committed to a career path in academic surgery
  • Emerging institutional/regional/national leaders
  • a member of the AAS, or have an AAS membership application submitted and in process – to access the AAS Membership Application please click HERE

Application: In addition to the online form, applicants must also submit

  • a current NIH biosketch or CV
  • two letters of support from clinicians (e.g., Chair of Surgery or Division Director)

Funding:

  • The Association of Academic Surgery will provide up to $1000 per mentee for travel and accommodation costs, for the in-person experience at the mentor’s workplace
  • Additional costs for travel and registration to the AAS Early Career Development Course in 2018 and the ACS Clinical Congress in 2019 will need to be covered by the mentee or their home institution

Application Timeline

  • February 1 – April 1, 2018 – Application Period Open
  • June 2018 – Applicant Interviews (held by Skype)
  • August 2018 – Mentor-Mentee matching
  • September 1, 2018 – Announcement of Selected Mentor-Mentee pairs (4 in total)
