Jeremiah Deneve, DO, FACS
Jeremiah ‘Jig’ Deneve, DO, FACS is the Associate Professor in the Division of Surgical Oncology at the UNC Department of Surgery. His medical training includes Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine at Midwestern University, Residency at Emory University School of Medicine, and Fellowships in both Surgical Oncology at Moffitt Cancer Center at University of South Florida and a Cardiothoracic Research Fellowship at Emory University School of Medicine. During the past 10 years, Dr. Deneve practiced academic surgery at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis, TN and was recruited to UNC to provide complex surgical oncology care and help establish a Peritoneal Surface Malignancy program.

Mohamed Zayed, MD, PhD, MBA
Mohamed Zayed, MD, PhD, MBA is an Associate Professor of Surgery at Washington University in St. Louis. He is a vascular surgeon with an active clinical practice, and leads an NIH-funded translational research laboratory. He also directs a multi-disciplinary research innovation center, and is a co-founder of multiple biomedical startup companies.

Oluwadamilola Fayanju, MD, MA, MPHS, FACS
Oluwadamilola “Lola” Fayanju, MD, MA, MPHS, FACS, is the Helen O. Dickens Presidential Associate Professor in the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and Chief of the Division of Breast Surgery for the University of Pennsylvania Health System, aka Penn Medicine. She is an academic breast surgical oncologist whose research spans four areas: (1) addressing disparities and promoting equity in breast cancer presentation, treatment, outcome, and clinical trial participation; (2) improving prognostication and treatment for biologically aggressive variants of breast cancer; (3) creating value in oncologic care, especially through the collection and application of patient-reported outcomes (PROs); and (4) elucidating the importance of race, ethnicity, and gender in the conduct of research and the promotion of a diverse healthcare and medical research workforce. Her research is supported by a diverse array of organizations including the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF), and she has published in a variety of journals including Annals of Surgery, Cancer, JAMA Surgery, and JAMA.

Krista Haines, DO
Dr. Krista Haines is an Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Division of Trauma, Critical Care, and Acute Care Surgery at Duke University. She holds a Master’s degree in Bioethics and Medical Humanities. In addition to her academic role, Dr. Haines serves as the Medical Director of Ethics for Duke University Health and is the Chair of the Hospital Ethics Committee. Her research employs mixed methods and focuses on the intersections of geriatrics, ethics, and nutrition. Dr. Haines is currently on an NIA K34 and funded by the NIH, DOD, and industry, evaluating nutrition and perioperative interventions on outcomes in emergency surgery and trauma patients.

S. Nabeel Zafar, MD, MPH
Nabeel Zafar, MD, MPH is an Assistant Professor of Surgery within the division of Surgical Oncology at the University of Wisconsin, Madison and Director of the Global Oncology program at the University of Wisconsin Carbone Cancer Center. Dr. Zafar completed his medical training from the Aga Khan University, an MPH from the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health followed by a general surgery residency at Howard University, and fellowships in Advanced GI Minimally Invasive Surgery at the University of Maryland, and Complex General Surgical Oncology at the MD Anderson Cancer Center. Dr Zafar is certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Medical Quality. His clinical practice is in gastrointestinal cancers including gastric, hepatopancreaticobiliary, and peritoneal surface malignancies with a focus on minimally invasive approaches.
Dr. Zafar conducts health services research and research on global oncology/global surgery. He analyzes large datasets to study outcomes after cancer surgery, as well as disparities in outcomes after surgical care.

Andrea Gillis, MD
Andrea Gillis is an endocrine surgeon practicing at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She is passionate about the reduction of surgical healthcare disparities. She is a translational scientist focusing on the influence of epigenetics on tumor outcomes.

Casey Silver, MD, MS
Casey Silver, MD, MS is a general surgery resident at Loyola University Medical Center. She recently completed a two year research fellowship in surgical outcomes and quality improvement at Northwestern University, and prior to residency she attended Amherst College and the University of Rochester School of Medicine. She aspires to a career as an academic trauma surgeon and her research interests include the delivery, quality, and cost of surgical care for vulnerable populations.
