Alicia Mohr, MD, and Mayur Patel, MD, MPH, have been selected to serve as new Associate Editors for the Acute Care Surgery section.
Abbey Fingeret, MD, MHPE, and Romeo Ignacio, Jr., MD, have been selected to serve as the new Associate Editors for the Education and Career Development section.
Daniel Chu, MD, MSPH, and Alexander Hawkins, MD, MPH, have been selected to serve as the new Associate Editors for the Gastrointestinal Surgery section.
Dr. Mohr is the Edward R. Woodward Professor of Surgery and Division Chief of Acute Care Surgery at the University of Florida, where she also serves as Associate Medical Director of Surgical and Trauma Intensive Care Units. Her academic interests include the mechanisms of recovery from anemia after hemorrhagic shock. Dr. Mohr holds an NIH R01 Award from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences focused on “Chronic Stress and Anemia Recovery following Major Trauma.” She serves on the Editorial Boards of several journals, including the Journal of Trauma & Acute Care Surgery and SHOCK. Dr. Mohr is a member of the American Surgical Association and has served as an Institutional Representative for the Association for Academic Surgery. She currently serves as Chair of the Acute Care Surgery Program Director’s Committee of the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma, a member of the Graduate and Education Committee of the Society of Critical Care Medicine, and Chair of the Diversity Committee of the Shock Society.
Dr. Patel is an Associate Professor of Surgery in the Division of Trauma, Surgical Critical Care & Emergency General Surgery at Vanderbilt University and serves as Deputy Chief of Surgical Services in the Tennessee Valley Healthcare System. His academic interests include the risk factors for neuropsychological dysfunction in patients who survive critical illness. Dr. Patel’s research funding as Principal Investigator includes three active R01 awards from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and a Veterans Affairs MERIT award. He is also the Program Director of a T32 training program focused on injury and critical illness, and he serves as a Permanent Member of the NIH Surgery, Anesthesia & Trauma Study Section. He has served as a member of the Outcomes Research Committee in the Association for Academic Surgery, the Science Lead for the Program Committee in the Eastern Association of the Surgery for Trauma, a member of the Multi-Institutional Trials Committee in the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma, and a member of the Awards Committee in the Society for Critical Care Medicine. He is also a member of the Society of Asian Academic Surgeons and the Coalition for National Trauma Research.
Dr. Fingeret is an Associate Professor of Surgery in the Division of Surgical Oncology at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. She recently earned a Master of Health Professions Teaching degree and is a member of the American College of Surgeons Academy of Master Surgeon Educators. Her academic interests include interprofessional team-based care, trainee assessment, and outcomes after endocrine surgery. While serving as a member of the Publications Committee in the Association for Academic Surgery (AAS), she earned the 2019 Reviewer of the Year Award; she now serves on the AAS Academic Advancement Committee. She is also the current Chair of the Assessment Curriculum and Evaluations Committee of the Association of Surgical Education, a member of the Grants and Fellowships Committee of the Association of Women Surgeons, a member of the Program Committee of the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons, and a member of the Publications Committee of the American Thyroid Association.
Dr. Ignacio is a Health Sciences Clinical Professor in the Division of Trauma, Surgical Critical Care, Burns, and Acute Care Surgery at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine, and a Pediatric Staff Surgeon and the Trauma Medical Director at the Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego. He is a retired U.S. Navy Captain who served as Medical Student Associate Surgery Clerkship Director, General Surgery Program Director, and Graduate Medical Education Committee Member at the Naval Medical Center San Diego. His academic interests include disparities in the care of trauma patients. Dr. Ignacio’s research funding includes a U.S. Department of Defense award to study the use of augmented reality to enable remote treatment of battlefield injuries. He has served as a member of the Publications Committee in the Association for Academic Surgery, a member of the Education Committee and Evaluation and Assessment Subcommittee of the Association of Surgical Education, an Associate Examiner for the American Board of Surgery Certifying Exam, a Consultant for the American Board of Surgery Pediatric Surgery Qualifying Examination, and Vice-Chair of Publications Committee of the American Pediatric Surgical Association. He is also a member of the Society of Asian Academic Surgeons and an Associate Member of the American College of Surgeons Academy of Master Surgeon Educators.
Drs. Fingeret and Ignacio will be taking over the section from Dr. Roy Phitayakorn, who has served as an Associate Editor since 2019. We are extremely grateful to Dr. Phitayakorn for his dedication and important contributions to the journal.
Dr. Chu is an Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he serves as Associate Vice Chair for Health Services Research. His academic interests include disparities in the care of patients with gastrointestinal disease. Dr. Chu holds an NIH Clinical Scientist Research Career Development Award (K23) from the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities focused on “Enhancing Health Literacy in Surgery to Eliminate Surgical Disparities for African-Americans with Inflammatory Bowel Disease.” Since January 2019, he has served as a member of the JSR Editorial Board. He also serves on the Editorial Board of the American Journal of Surgery. Dr. Chu’s contributions to the Association for Academic Surgery include serving as a member of the Publications Committee, the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee, and the Finance Committee. He has also served on the Scholarship Committee and Communications Committee of the Society of Ascian Academic Surgeons and the Research Committee of the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract.
Dr. Hawkins is an Associate Professor of Surgery in the Division of General Surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he serves as Director of the Colorectal Research Center. His academic interests include outcomes research in colorectal surgery. Dr. Hawkins holds an NIH Clinical Scientist Research Career Development Award (K23) from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases focused on “Novel Assessment of the Role of Surgery in Recurrent Diverticulitis.” For the past two years, he has served as Co-chair of the Publications Committee of the Association for Academic Surgery; in this role, he has led the review of manuscripts submitted to JSR from the annual Academic Surgical Congress. He also serves as an Associate Editor for Diseases of the Colon & Rectum and as an Editorial Board member of Annals of Surgery Open. He also serves on the AAS Leadership Committee, the SAGES Colorectal Task Force Committee, and the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons Clinical Practice Guidelines Committee and Self Assessment Committee.
Drs. Chu and Hawkins will be taking the reins from Dr. James Yoo, who has served as an Associate Editor since 2019. We are deeply appreciative to Dr. Yoo for his enormous contributions to the journal.
