The Journal of Surgical Research (JSR) is currently accepting applications for Associate Editor (AE) for the Gastrointestinal Surgery section of the journal. The GI Associate Editor typically handles approximately six articles per week, performing the primary assessment of manuscripts submitted to the journal and making the determination as to whether manuscripts meet the standard for peer review. If a paper qualifies for peer review, the AE assigns experts in the field of study to review the manuscript. The AE oversees the entire review process by first choosing expert reviewers, then evaluating the accuracy and quality of the reviews submitted, and then making a final recommendation regarding the disposition of the manuscript (revise, accept, reject). Consequently, the AE role is critical to maintaining the integrity of the peer-review process and ultimately ensuring a high standard of excellence for JSR. The position affords AEs the opportunity to contribute at a very high level to the quality of the peer-reviewed scientific surgical literature and to join a group of individuals with strong ties and interest in academic surgery. Associate Editors meet twice each year, once via teleconference during the summer and once in person at the Editorial Board Meeting held during the American College of Surgeons Clinical Congress in October. Associate Editors are appointed for a 5-year term after which renewal will be considered.
For this AE position, JSR is seeking high-energy applicants with expertise in gastrointestinal surgery. Expertise in colorectal surgery and both basic science and clinical research will be extremely valuable. The applicant should have a strong publication record in the peer-reviewed literature; scientific impact is more important than volume. Previous Editorial Board membership experience or significant experience as an ad-hoc reviewer for clinical and/or basic science journals is preferred. Because JSR is the official journal of the Association for Academic Surgery and the Society of Asian Academic Surgeons, candidates should have a history of participation in one or both of these organizations.
If you are interested in being considered for this position, please send a copy of your CV and a one-paragraph statement regarding your interest, qualifications, and long-term goals to JSR@stellarmed.com before 11:59 pm EST Friday, April 12, 2019.
