Description: This photo was taken during a home visit while working with the Ethiopia ACT program. The woman pictured has taken care of her paraplegic husband for decades after he was injured in a work accident. She faced notable struggles as the primary bread winner for the household. I was inspired by her devotion to him, and the hospitality she showed us, the medical team providing home care. When I asked to take her picture, she shyly laughed, “Now I will be famous in America”. I feel grateful to be part of a profession that gives us glimpses into humanity at its best, when we’re caring for one another.Â
Artist: Dianela Perdomo is a medical student at Johns Hopkins interested in general surgery. She grew up in rural Cuba, which fueled her interest in global health work. She enjoys reading philosophy and photography.
