Three Awards:
- AAS/AASF Trainee Research Fellowship Award– Basic Science/Translational
- AAS/AASF Trainee Research Fellowship Award – Clinical Outcomes/Health Services
- AAS/AASF Trainee Research Fellowship Award – Education
Purpose: These 3 awards provide an eligible resident or fellow who has completed at least two years of postgraduate training in a surgical discipline the opportunity to spend one year in a full-time research position with an AAS member. The award of $30,000 for one year per award may be used for salary support or for the direct-cost expenditures of the research. The award is to be expended solely for the purpose of the sponsored research. The funding period for this award begins July 1st.
Eligibility/Application:
- Applicants must be residents or fellows who are currently enrolled in an accredited training program and have completed at least two years of postgraduate training in a surgical discipline.
- The awardee must be a candidate member or an active member of the AAS. (applicants with AAS membership applications in process are also eligible)
- There must be at least one mentor who is an active or senior member of the AAS.

Purpose:
The AAS/AASF Global Surgery Research Fellowship Award is for residents and fellows engaged in global health surgical research. This award is designed for individuals who are interested in advancing the field of Global Surgery through research, including but not limited to: proposals aimed at further defining or reducing the global burden of surgical disease (on a community, institutional or regional basis); proposals aimed at defining existing human and material resources available for surgical care in low- or middle-income countries; proposals outlining the ability of surgical treatment to prevent death and disability in resource-poor settings; proposals aimed at identifying strategies for instituting or improving surgical care or capacity in resource-poor settings; proposals aimed at preventative interventions for surgical disease; and proposals aimed at advancing surgical education or manpower in areas of limited resources. For all projects, identification and definable participation of local/on-site partners in the collaborating country is required. The award of $30,000 for one year may be used for salary support or for the direct-cost expenditures of the research. The award is to be expended solely for the purpose of the sponsored research, and the award period begins July 1st.
Eligibility/Application:
- Applicants must be residents or fellows who are currently enrolled in an accredited training program and have completed at least two years of postgraduate training in a surgical discipline.
- The awardee must be a candidate member or an active member of the AAS.
- There must be at least one mentor who is an active or senior member of the AAS (applicants with AAS membership applications in process are also eligible).
Applicants submit the following materials:
- A one-page Cover Letter outlining their academic development plan for their one-year research period, their short and long-term career goals, and any other relevant information that they wish the committee to consider with their application.
- Applicant’s curriculum vitae or NIH-Style Biosketch – not to exceed 5 pages.
- Lay Summary of the project (200-300 words only)
- Comprehensive Research Plan – Not including your references, this plan should be no more than five (5) [single-spaced, Arial 11pt, 1″ margin] pages inclusive of the following items:
- abstract for research proposal
- significance of research
- background information
- preliminary observations
- experimental plan (methods, materials, potential limitations and pitfalls)
- Applications exceeding these page limitations WILL NOT BE REVIEWED.
- Letter of support from sponsoring AAS mentor. The research mentor letter should include history of mentorship of previous research fellows.
- Letter of support of protected time from the chair of your department. The letter must guarantee that the applicant will spend the entire funding period in the research fellowship and that the department is committed to providing the additional support necessary to ensure completion of the project
- NIH-style Biosketch from your AAS mentor – not to exceed 5 pages.
The top-rated finalists for each award will be invited to interview with the selection committee.
Committee Review:
A committee, consisting of the AAS Global Affairs Committee, the president-elect, and ad-hoc members as needed, will review all proposals. The top rated proposals will be selected as finalists, and these applicants will be invited to interview with the selection committee. The award recipient will be selected from these finalists.
Acceptance of Award
This proposal may be submitted to other extramural funding sources for support, but this must be acknowledged on the application form. Submission for support elsewhere will not affect the evaluation of this proposal; however, in the event that more than one extramural award is offered, the investigator will be required to accept only one source of funding. The research award recipient will be introduced during the AAS Award Session at the Academic Surgical Congress. A one-page formal progress report for the research project and copies of pertinent publications resulting from the funding of the research award should be forwarded to the office of the Secretary upon completion of the one-year research project. A final report and presentation of work accomplished will be required at the Academic Surgical Congress following the conclusion of the grant.
Faculty Research Awards

Purpose:
The intent of this award — which is supported by the Journal of Surgical Research and its publisher, Elsevier Science — is to provide early-career research support to junior faculty members of the AAS.
Eligibility/Application:

- Applicants must be full-time faculty who have not yet attained the rank of Associate Professor
- Faculty in any surgical specialty or discipline are eligible
- Applicants must be active members of the AAS
- The awardee must not be a principal investigator on a NIH R01 or a VA Merit Review Grant and may not hold a career development type of award
- Applicants submit the following materials:
- A one-page Cover Letter outlining their career development plan, their short and long-term career goals, and their plans for interacting with their mentors/collaborators
- Applicant’s NIH-Style Biosketch – not to exceed 5 pages
- Comprehensive Research Plan – Not including references, this plan should be no more than five (5) [single-spaced, Arial 11pt, 1″ margin] pages inclusive of the following items:

This proposal may be submitted to other funding sources for support, but this must be acknowledged on the application form. Submission for support elsewhere will not affect the evaluation of this proposal. However, should the applicant be awarded the Roslyn Award, there must be no scientific or budgetary overlap between the Roslyn Award and other awards or grants. If scientific or budgetary overlap does exist between the Roslyn Award and other awards or grants, the investigator will be required to accept only one source of funding.
Winner Receives:
- $50,000 for one year to be used for direct-cost expenditures incurred in the conduct of the proposed research project; the award may not be used for salary support. The funding period for this award begins March 1.

Purpose:
As part of the AAS mission to increase diversity in our membership, we are pleased to offer an annual AAS Student Diversity Travel Award. This award is presented to three medical students from an underrepresented minority.
Application:
- Department chairs and clerkship directors should encourage eligible medical students to apply for this unique opportunity
- Candidates must submit an online application consisting, an essay describing their commitment to becoming a leader in academic surgery (300-word limit), and a letter of support from their chair or clerkship director.
Winner Receives:

- A $500 travel stipend and up to 3 nights hotel accommodation at the meeting hotel

Purpose:
Ten (10) travel awards are funded by the AAS Foundation, and are awarded to residents, fellows, or faculty-level attendees who are either female or from underrepresented minorities or are currently serving in the military. The AAS Fall Courses provide pearls of wisdom and a discussion of the advances in research methods, academic career advancement, grant writing, as well as incorporate interactive sessions where participants can discuss their ideas with academic surgical leaders and network with colleagues.
Applicants submit an essay, along with a letter of support (in PDF format) from their chair, program director, or dean of the medical school (or equivalent). The essay should include a general overview of their academic careers and research history, and include reasons why the applicant would benefit from attending the Fall Courses and what he or she hopes to gain from the experience there.
Winner Receives:
- $1,000 to be used for travel, hotel accommodations, and registration for the Fall Courses
- Complimentary AAS membership for one year

Awarded annually to medical students considering pursuing a career in academic surgery.
PURPOSE:
The intent of these awards is to recognize outstanding research efforts by medical students and to encourage student interest in pursuing careers in academic surgery.
APPLICATION/ELIGIBILITY:
- The candidate must be a graduating senior medical student, receiving his/her medical degree between January and July 2021 and should be considering a career in academic surgery.
- Applicants must submit the application which includes a 250 word summary of their research project AND a letter from their mentor describing the student’s contributions to the project, the qualifications of the student, and the qualifications of the mentor.
WINNERS RECEIVE:
- Six awards will be given, three for basic science projects and three for clinical/outcomes/health services/education research projects
- All six awardees will be invited to attend the Academic Surgical Congress and will receive complimentary registration and a $500 travel stipend.
- Complimentary Medical Student AAS membership for one year
- Award certificate presented at the AAS Awards Session during the Academic Surgical Congress
- Name published in the AAS Blog “The Academic Surgeon” and on the AAS Web Site
Fourteen years ago the first Academic Surgical Congress (ASC) was held in San Diego, California. Since that first meeting. The Association for Academic Surgery and the Society of University Surgeons have jointly educated thousands of surgeons at every stage of their careers. We have established a proud tradition of providing education to help academic surgeons advance in their careers. In recognition of all we have accomplished together, the ASC is pleased to again offer a career development award – the 10 x 10 Career Development Traveling Fellowship. This award has been made possible due to the strong financial support of the members of AAS and SUS, and our Congress attendees.
Purpose: The purpose of this traveling fellowship is to provide a member of the AAS and SUS the opportunity to visit a scholar or clinician at another institution for one week. The goal of the fellowship is to further the recipient’s academic development, and to promote interaction and learning among surgeons in different academic practices in the United States. The traveling fellow is expected to observe procedures in the operating room, participate in relevant research activities, and attend host institution conferences at the institution of his/her choosing for one week.
Winner receives: The Award financial support up to $2,000 to cover the recipient’s airfare, lodging, and other related expenses. The winner will also be recognized during the Thursday Award Ceremony at the annual Academic Surgical Congress.
Application Requirements: Applicants must be Active members in both the AAS and the SUS. The application consists of:
- an essay (up to 300 words) outlining the applicant’s activities within the societies, the institution they would like to visit, and their career development goals related to that visit.
- an NIH-style biosketch

The recipient will be announced at the 2020 Academic Surgical Congress in Orlando, Florida during the Awards Ceremony on Thursday, February 6th.

The award includes complimentary registration to both the Fall Courses taking place on October 26, 2019 in San Francisco and the Academic Surgical Congress taking place February 4-6, 2020, in Orlando.

The West African College of Surgeons (WACS) is pleased to announce the International Visiting Fellowship Award. The purpose of this award is to encourage the exchange of ideas and information about clinical, scientific and policy aspects of surgery between members of the AAS and members of the WACS.
The recipient of the second annual AAS/WACS International Visiting Fellowship Award will receive support to travel to West Africa to attend the annual meeting of the WACS. The recipient may be asked to give presentations at the WACS annual conference, and will also host the visitor from the WACS attending the Academic Surgical Congress.
This award is available to active members of the AAS who meet the following requirements:
- A strong history of participation in the AAS
- A record of significant accomplishment in any aspect of surgical research
- A current full-time academic appointment

The AAS and the Taiwan Surgical Association (TSA) are pleased to announce the International Visiting Professorship Award. The purpose of this award is to encourage the exchange of ideas and information about clinical, scientific and policy aspects of surgery between members of the AAS and members of the TSA.
The recipient of the AAS/TSA International Visiting Professorship Award will receive support to travel to Taiwan to attend and present at the TSA Annual Meeting. The recipient will also serve as the host for the TSA visiting professor attending the Academic Surgical Congress.

RACS Fellows who are within their first 10 years of fellowship are considered ‘younger fellows;” the RACS Younger Fellows Committee serves their interests and assures representation within the College. Each year, the Younger Fellows Forum is convened by the RACS Younger Fellows Committee immediately before the RACS Annual Scientific Congress. The purpose of the Younger Fellows Forum is to discuss policy issues of particular relevance to young surgeons―such as those related to training, certification, industry relations, etc.―and ultimately to generate a series of specific recommendations that are brought to the RACS Council, thereby ensuring that young surgeons in ANZ have a voice in the RACS.
The Leadership Exchange
The Younger Fellows Committee and the AAS developed the Leadership Exchange in order to foster an international alliance involving the future leaders in surgery. The primary focus of the visit will be to participate in discussions concerning important policy issues with young surgeons in the RACS. The recipient may be asked to give presentations at the Younger Fellows Forum, the Developing a Career in Academic Surgery Course, and the Annual Scientific Congress. Additionally, the recipient will host the Leadership Exchange visitor from the RACS Younger Fellows Committee attending the Academic Surgical Congress.
