I love academic medicine - I’m passionate about not only surgical education, but also clinical and health services research. I spent three years in my academic development time obtaining an MPH and performing clinical and health services research at the Center for Surgery and Public Health at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, focused on improving surgical access and outcomes for patients with limited English proficiency. During those years, I was also a research fellow on a NIH-funded multi-center surgical education randomized trial (the PACTS Trial), assessing how resident education can improve culturally dexterous care for surgical patients.Â
The AAS Fall Course on surgical research was a fundamental early aspect of my education and I hope to continue and improve this program as a committee member. In addition, I would like to maximize the wonderful AAS network to strengthen inter-institutional research collaborations as well as provide additional opportunities for residents to find research opportunities and mentors outside of their home networks. Finally, mentorship programs should expand beyond research, focusing on coaching residents to improve their leadership skills, find their path through surgical residency, and increase their sense of purpose within surgery, hopefully leading to decreased work-related burnout. I appreciate the opportunity to apply and look forward to the serving the AAS and its members.Â
