I am an assistant professor in general and thoracic pediatric surgery at Children's Wisconsin through the Medical College of Wisconsin. Although I practice the full breadth of pediatric surgery, I have an interest in surgical oncology and I am a member of the Children's Oncology Group. I have a PhD in cancer biology and I have started a lab embedded within a sarcoma stem cell lab. For decades there has been clinical and anecdotal evidence that surgery can trigger metastasis however the mechanisms underlying this effect are largely unknown. I was personally impacted by this when my mother was diagnosed with lung cancer and a year after surgery to remove her tumor she progressed to metastatic disease and tragically passed away. I study the impact of surgery on the growth and progression of lung metastases in osteosarcoma using a mouse model. I am investigating the perioperative period as a novel therapeutic window to impact metastatic progression. Additionally I am developing a pediatric thoracic robotic program at Children's Wisconsin. By serving on an AAS committee hope to gain more experience and mentorship from working with successful surgeon scientists. Additionally I hope this opportunity will foster future scientific collaborations. Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
Caroline Maloney
