National organizations such as the AAS are rarely shared with students, and they don’t get involved until later on. I only discovered AAS after meeting my mentor who has dedicated her work and life to academic surgery. My classmates who aren’t as fortunate to have a mentor introduce them to national groups have no way of learning about opportunities to get involved on the national scale. Because of this, I want to serve on a committee as a medical student who can serve as a bridge between faculty and students. I believe that I can offer a unique perspective from the student point of view while promoting the mission of the committee. Also, I will strive to make the goals of the AAS and ASC accessible to a wider population.
