Since I was a resident at Oregon Health and Science University (Portland, OR), I have been interested in surgical education. This has included starting a co-resident mentoring program, serving on our resident council both as a member and co-chair, and publications on dealing with the struggling learner (Surgery, 2020), entrustable professional activity (EPA) creation (Surgery Open Science, 2019), evaluating the effectiveness of our intern summer school (Am J Surgery, 2020), and helping to implement a surgical palliative care curriculum into undergraduate medical education (Am Surg, 2023). More recently, as a transplant surgeon at Vanderbilt University Medical Center (Nashville, TN), I was appointed as a member to the American Society of Transplant Surgeons Fellowship Training Committee. I have also started to become involved with general surgery resident education at Vanderbilt, including implementing the faculty-resident mentoring program. I hope to serve on the AAS Education Committee to promote high-quality education research and education best practices, advocate for the surgical educator and the role of mentors, and also continue my development as a surgical educator. I am personally interested in the intersection of stress, performance and autonomy, and how we as a surgical community grant autonomy to trainees through EPAs. I feel strongly about training the next generation of surgeons, and only through intentional efforts and leadership will we ensure that future general surgery residents continue to have a robust and meaningful training experience. I would very much look forward to serving on the AAS Education Committee to help promote the AAS mission.
