The AAS has afforded me tremendous opportunities to grow as a leader in academic surgery and I want to be able to give back not only to the organization but to the members of AAS to further improve the mission. It was through AAS that I have met some of the most inspirational academic surgeons who have inspired me toward my career path.
I am most eager about the Committee on Clinical and Health Services Research because I best bring my experiences in HSR to improve abstract quality, recruitment of HSR leaders, and designing courses for AAS. I envision our team creating a mentorship program for students/residents and leaders within the HSR community such that AAS becomes a leader in producing the best researchers. Â I also am passionate about advocacy and paving the way forward for the future generation, which is why I also am interested in the Committee on Academic Advancement. Through this committee I want to provide young surgeons with the opportunity to begin establishing a successful career. The AAS committee was the organization that provided me the opportunity to be an AAS Senior Medical Student Travel Award winner prior to beginning residency and through that experience was able to connect with leaders of AAS.
In retrospect, I am joining an AAS committee because I believe my experiences in policy, advocacy, and research provide a new perspective and engagement for the improvement of creating the next generation of young academic surgeons.
